Sunglasses are the accessory people most want to identify and the one that gives a search the least to work with. The reason is arithmetic. In a full-length outfit photo, the glasses occupy a small share of the frame, and every tool downscales an upload before reading it. Snagfit downscales to 1280 pixels on the longest side, so a small share of the frame becomes a small number of pixels.
A description written from few pixels is a general description. A general description produces a general shopping search. That is why so many sunglasses searches come back with a page of black rectangles.
The fix is one gesture, and everything below is about what to preserve while you make it.
What actually identifies a pair of sunglasses?
Four fields, in descending order of how much they narrow a search.
Frame shape does most of the work, and the named shapes are a short list: aviator, wayfarer, round, cat eye, oval, rectangle, square, shield and wraparound. Retailers file sunglasses under these names, so getting the shape right is what puts the search in the correct aisle.
Lens tint, which shopping listings split into a colour and a finish. Brown, green, grey, blue or amber for colour. Gradient, solid, mirrored or polarised for finish. A gradient brown lens is a far narrower search than a dark lens.
Frame material and colour, which usually comes down to acetate, metal, or a combination of the two, plus whatever colour the acetate is. Tortoiseshell is its own named finish and worth recording when you see it.
The hinge area, meaning where the arm meets the front of the frame. This is where most of the design personality on a pair of glasses actually sits: a brow bar, a rivet, a decorative hinge, a widened temple. It is small and it is distinctive, which is a difficult combination for a photo.
Why does the angle change what the search sees?
Frame shape reads correctly only from close to straight on.
Turn the head to three-quarter and the lens compresses horizontally. A round frame photographs as an oval. A square frame photographs as a rectangle. Turn to full profile and the lens becomes a sliver with no readable shape at all.
Snagfit records what the photo shows, not what the object is. A profile shot produces a description of the wrong shape, and the search follows it, so the results are wrong in a way that looks confident.
Here is the awkward part. Profile is the only angle that shows the brand mark, because almost every pair of sunglasses carries its branding on the outside of the temple arm. So the angle that identifies the shape and the angle that identifies the brand are two different angles.
If the source is a video, take both. Scrub for a straight-on frame and a profile frame and upload the straight-on one first. If the source is a single still, take what you have and accept that one field is missing.
What is the right crop for glasses?
Crop to the head and a little around it. Not to the glasses alone.
Cropping to the glasses themselves sounds correct and is usually worse, because it removes the face, and the face is the only scale reference in the picture. Without it, a wide frame and a narrow frame on a small face look identical. The head gives the frame a size.
So: crown of the head to roughly the chin, with the full width of the face included. That fills the uploaded image with the part you care about and drops the outfit, the background and the rest of the body.
This is the same principle as cropping for a better match applied to the smallest item in the picture. The looser the original photo, the more the crop is doing.
Are glasses pushed up on the head easier to search?
Often yes, which surprises people.
When a pair is pushed up into the hair, the whole front of the frame sits flat and visible with nothing behind the lenses. The shape reads cleanly, the frame colour reads cleanly, and the arms are usually visible along the side of the head, so the hinge detail is there too.
What you lose is the lens tint, because you are looking at hair through the lens rather than a face, and hair is a poor reference for judging how dark or how coloured a lens is.
That is a fair trade. Shape narrows a search more than tint does, and shape is the field that is hardest to recover from any other frame.
Why does lens tint keep coming back wrong?
Because tint is a colour field, and colour depends on light.
A grey lens photographed against a bright sky looks black. The same lens indoors looks grey. A brown gradient lens in warm evening light looks amber. A mirrored lens shows you the reflection rather than the tint, so what the photo records is the sky, the street, or the photographer.
Mirrored lenses are the specific case worth knowing about. If the lens is acting as a mirror, there is genuinely no tint information in the photo at all, and the description falls back to the frame. The picture simply contains no tint to read.
The general rule is the one from why lighting changes what a search finds: a daylight photo in open shade reports colour more accurately than either direct sun or indoor light.
What kind of result should you expect?
It depends almost entirely on how ordinary the frame is.
A plain black rectangular acetate frame exists in hundreds of near-identical versions across every price level from five pounds to five hundred. The search will find plenty of them and no way to tell which one you saw. If what you wanted was the look, that is a good result. If you wanted the exact pair, the photo did not carry enough to separate them.
A frame with something unusual about it, a distinct shape, coloured acetate, a visible brow bar, an odd lens size, narrows the field a long way. These often reach the actual model.
Designer eyewear sits in an odd position, because most of it is manufactured under licence by a small number of eyewear groups, which means a house frame and a mid-price frame can be physically similar in a way the branding hides. The practical effect is that searching for a cheaper version works better in eyewear than in most categories.
Does the face shape in the photo tell you anything?
It tells you the size, which is a field people forget exists.
Sunglasses are sold in measured sizes, printed on the inside of the arm as three numbers: the lens width, the bridge width and the arm length, all in millimetres. A 52-18-145 and a 58-14-140 can be the same frame shape in the same colour and look completely different on two people.
A photo cannot read those numbers. What it can show is proportion: whether the lens covers most of the eye socket or extends past the cheekbone, whether the frame is narrower or wider than the face, and where the arm crosses the temple. That is why keeping the face in the crop matters. Without it the description carries a shape and no scale.
If you find the model and want the version that will suit you, the measurements on the listing are the thing to compare, and the closest reference you have is a pair you already own. Take yours off and read the numbers on the arm.
What about prescription frames and clear lenses?
The same fields apply, with one field removed.
Optical frames are identified by shape, material, colour and hinge in exactly the same way. The difference is that there is no tint to record, so the description runs on three fields instead of four and the search is correspondingly wider.
Clear lenses also introduce a specific problem: the eyes are visible through them, so a lot of what the picture shows in the lens area is face rather than frame. The frame outline itself can be thin, pale, or rimless, and a rimless frame in a photograph is close to invisible. For those, the arm and the bridge are doing all the identifying, and a three-quarter shot is worth more than a straight-on one for once.
Blue-light and photochromic lenses sit in between. Photochromic lenses darken in sunlight, so an outdoor photo of them describes a tint the frame does not have indoors. If the search comes back with tinted results and you wanted clear ones, that is likely why.
What should you do when the result is not close?
Three things, in order.
Re-crop tighter and upload again. Most disappointing eyewear results are a crop problem, and a second attempt at a better crop costs nothing.
Find a different frame from the same source. If it came from a video, there is almost always a shot where the person turns towards the camera, and that frame is worth scrubbing for.
Then describe what you can see and search the words yourself. "Round gold metal frame, brown gradient lens" typed into a retailer's own search sometimes lands where an image search does not, because you can add the detail the photo failed to carry.
