Why are patterns harder to match than plain fabric?

A plain navy jumper is one search term. A floral print is a thousand different prints sharing one name, and no shopping listing describes which one it is.

A plain navy jumper is easy to search. Navy is one colour, jumper is one garment type, and both words mean the same thing to every retailer.

A floral shirt is not, and the reason is not the photo. It is that "floral" is one word covering thousands of unrelated designs, and no shopping listing anywhere says which one it is.

Why does pattern vocabulary run out so fast?

Because it was never built to be precise.

A retailer describing a plain garment has good words available: the colour, the garment type, the neckline, the material. Each one narrows the field, and they combine.

A retailer describing a printed garment has one word. Floral. Abstract. Animal. Geometric. Those words exist to put the item in a browsing category, not to identify which of ten thousand prints it carries.

So a search built from a description of a specific print matches everything in the family, because that is all the listings say. Which patterns are the exception?

Geometric patterns with established names, and they behave completely differently.

Stripes have real vocabulary. Breton, pinstripe, awning stripe, candy stripe, railroad stripe. These describe different widths and spacings and retailers use them consistently.

Checks have more. Gingham, windowpane, tartan, plaid, glen check, prince of Wales, houndstooth, buffalo check. Each is a specific arrangement and each is a reliable search term.

Others with names: polka dot, herringbone, argyle, chevron, paisley, leopard, zebra, snake, camouflage, tie dye.

Saying "houndstooth" instead of "patterned" narrows a search enormously, because a retailer selling a houndstooth jacket almost certainly wrote the word houndstooth. Saying "floral" narrows nothing, because a retailer selling a floral dress wrote floral and so did five thousand others.

This is the useful practical split. Before you get frustrated with a pattern search, ask whether the pattern has a name. If it does, use it. If it does not, expect a wide result and plan around it.

Why does scale not appear in listings?

Because there is no standard for it, and most retailers do not bother.

A small ditsy floral and a large tropical placement print are visually different garments that a person would never confuse. Both are described as floral. Some retailers add "ditsy", "micro" or "oversized", and most write nothing at all.

That leaves scale as something you can see clearly in a photograph and cannot search for. Which is frustrating in a specific way: you know exactly what is wrong with the results and there is no word to fix it with.

The workaround is colour. Scale is hard to express and colour is easy, so adding the colour terms yourself does some of the work the scale term would have done. A search for "green and cream small floral cotton shirt" gets closer than "floral shirt", because the two colour words are narrowing.

What does compression do to a pattern?

It removes the small ones entirely.

Image compression discards fine, low-contrast, repeating detail before anything else, because that is what makes a file smaller without the picture looking obviously wrong. A small-scale print is fine, low-contrast, repeating detail almost by definition.

So a ditsy floral at a distance in a compressed screenshot flattens into a single muddy colour. Snagfit reads what survived, which is a plain garment in a colour that is the average of the print. The description is accurate about the image and wrong about the garment.

This is the same mechanism that makes knitwear hard to find, where stitch texture disappears and a cable knit reads as plain. Pattern and texture are the same kind of information as far as compression is concerned.

Large, high-contrast patterns survive well. A bold stripe, a large check, a big graphic print: all of these are big shapes with hard edges, and compression preserves big shapes with hard edges.

What is a placement print?

A design positioned on one part of a garment rather than repeated across it, and it is the hardest case of all.

A single motif on the chest, a border along a hem, a graphic across the back, a panel down one side. These are placement prints, and they are common on everything from t-shirts to dresses.

They are hard to search because the listing describes the garment type and the base colour, and the print is either unmentioned or given a name that only that brand uses. There is no category word to fall back on.

A graphic t-shirt is the everyday version of this. The shirt is filed as a t-shirt in a colour. What is printed on it, which is the entire reason somebody wants it, appears nowhere in searchable text unless the retailer typed out the slogan.

For these, describing what you see and searching the words yourself usually beats another upload. You can type the slogan. The photo search cannot.

How should you crop a patterned garment?

Keep the pattern at a readable scale and keep the garment shape.

Two failures are possible. Crop too wide and the pattern shrinks until it disappears into a texture, which is when a print gets recorded as a plain colour. Crop too tight and you have a beautiful patch of fabric with no garment attached, so the description carries a pattern and nothing to put it on.

The right crop shows the pattern repeating at least a few times and includes something that identifies the garment: a collar, a hem, a shoulder line.

For a shirt, that is the torso. For a dress, the upper half. For a skirt, the waist to mid-thigh, which keeps the waistband and shows the repeat. Cropping for a better match has the general rules and this is the case where the balance is hardest to judge.

Side light helps with textured patterns like herringbone and jacquard, where the pattern is woven rather than printed and reads through shadow.

Does a woven pattern behave differently from a printed one?

Yes, and the difference is worth knowing because it changes what light does.

A printed pattern sits on the surface of the fabric. It is flat, it has no relief, and it reads the same under any light. Compression is its only enemy.

A woven pattern is built into the cloth from different coloured or differently finished yarns. Herringbone, houndstooth, jacquard, tweed and most checks in tailoring cloth are woven. These have texture as well as colour, so they cast small shadows and read through relief.

That means side light helps a woven pattern and does nothing for a printed one. A herringbone jacket photographed under flat frontal light can lose its pattern entirely, while the same jacket lit from one side shows every line.

Woven patterns also tend to have real names, since they come from a tailoring tradition that named them. So they are the easier case twice over: better vocabulary and a way to bring the pattern out in the photograph.

Are patterns worse for matching a whole outfit?

They are, and it shows up in a specific way.

When one garment in a photo carries a strong pattern, it draws attention away from the plain pieces beside it. A printed shirt under a plain coat presents more visual information than the coat does, so it can outrank the coat in the results even when the coat is larger.

That is useful if the printed piece is what you want and unhelpful if it is not, and it is the same prominence ordering described in why the search picks the wrong garment.

The fix is the usual one. If you want the plain piece, crop the printed one out. A patterned garment will win any competition it is allowed to enter, so the way to stop it is to remove it from the frame.

What should you do differently with a patterned piece?

Three adjustments, and all of them accept the limitation rather than fighting it.

Name the pattern if it has a name. This is the largest single improvement available, and it costs nothing. Learning the difference between a windowpane and a glen check pays for itself.

Add the colours. Where the pattern word is generic, colour terms are what narrow the search. Two or three colours in a query does real work.

Search for the shape and accept a different print. Often what you actually wanted was a shirt dress in that shape, in something floral. Framed that way the search succeeds easily, and it is the same reframe as in building an outfit around one piece.

And when the print itself is the point, expect the result to be a family rather than a match.
