Lens App and Snagfit both take a photo of clothing and tell you what the clothing is. They are built around opposite inputs, and the clearest evidence for that sits in Lens App's own instructions to its users.

What Lens App gives you back

Lens App's page for identifying clothes describes a close reading of one garment. Its own list of what the model examines: "silhouette, color, fabric texture, prints, logos, buttons, zippers, and how the garment sits on the body."

What comes back, per the same page, is a garment name, a set of style keywords, and visually similar shopping matches. So the first answer you get is a vocabulary answer. The thing in the photo has a name, and Lens App gives you that name along with the words used to describe its style.

That is a real job and it is one people need. Plenty of shopping searches fail at the naming step, because you cannot search for a garment you have no word for.

"Crop to one clothing item" is the instruction to read twice

Lens App's own guidance for getting a good result says to crop to one clothing item. Its page explains why: a full outfit photo can "confuse the model because multiple items compete for attention."

That sentence is the most important fact in this comparison. Lens App is built to read one garment closely, and it tells you so.

Snagfit takes the opposite approach. You upload the whole frame, Snagfit splits it into separate garments on its own, and it returns between four and eight of them, ordered with the most prominent piece first. Nothing is cropped and nothing is circled. The competing items Lens App warns about are the thing Snagfit was built to handle.

Seven garments means seven crops

Take an ordinary influencer screenshot: jacket, top, jeans, boots, bag, sunglasses, a necklace. Seven pieces in one frame.

With Lens App, following its own advice, that is seven crops and seven searches. You crop to the jacket, search, note the result. Crop to the top, search again. Then the jeans. The work is real, and by the fifth crop most people stop and decide the boots were the only piece they wanted anyway.

With Snagfit that is one upload. The garments come back as a list, so the ones you did not think to ask about are in front of you with the ones you did. That is the case where somebody discovers the bag was the piece they actually wanted.

Neither behaviour is wrong. They cost different amounts of your attention, and the right one depends on whether you arrived knowing which garment you were after.

A style keyword and a buy link answer different questions

Lens App returns style keywords. Snagfit returns buy links per garment. Those are answers to two separate questions, and it is worth knowing which one you are asking.

If your question is "what is this piece called so I can search for it myself", a garment name and some style words finish the job. You take the words and go to the shop you already like.

If your question is "where can I buy this", a keyword leaves you with more work to do. Snagfit's output is a price and a link per garment, resolving to the retailer's own page, so the next tap is the shop rather than another search.

Where reading one garment closely is the better tool

There is a case where Lens App's approach wins outright, and it deserves saying plainly rather than being skipped.

You have one photo of one garment, taken close up, and you want to know what it is made of and what the details are called. A shirt with an unusual collar. A shoe with a sole you cannot name. Lens App's own description of reading buttons, zippers and fabric texture is aimed at that exact question, and a crop costs you nothing when there was only ever one garment in the frame.

Snagfit will read that photo too, but the part of it that separates garments has nothing to do on a single close-up. Its detection is built to separate garments, and a photo with one garment in it gives that nothing to do.

One free scan each, then they ask for different things

Lens App gives you a scan in the browser, then shows a message reading "You've Used Your Free Scan" and offers unlimited identifications through its app. Its own page confirms the app runs on both iOS and Android.

Snagfit gives one free look with no account, then charges 99 cents per look. It stays a web page the whole way through, so there is no version of it to install and no update to approve.

So both are free once, and then one asks for an install while the other asks for 99 cents. If you are on a borrowed laptop or a work phone where you cannot install anything, that decides it. If you expect to search clothes most days, a free app you already downloaded costs less than a per-look charge.

The file it accepts, and the photo that works

Lens App's page states a 50MB limit and lists JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. HEIC is the useful one there, because that is the format an iPhone saves photos in by default, and a tool that rejects HEIC forces a conversion step.

Its advice on what makes a good photo is short: "clear lighting, a tight crop, and visible details." The first and third parts of that apply to Snagfit identically. The middle part is where the two separate.

Cropping is not banned on Snagfit's side either, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Snagfit has its own guide on how to crop a photo for a better match, and it recommends a crop when two people are in frame or when the garment you want sits in a corner of a busy picture. The difference is that with Snagfit a crop is a fix you reach for when a result disappoints, rather than a step you complete before every search.

"Visually similar" is a different promise than a description

Lens App's own wording for its shopping results is "visually similar shopping matches." That phrase is doing honest work, and the word to notice is similar.

Visual similarity compares your picture against other pictures and ranks what looks alike. It is strong on shape and colour. It struggles when the garment you photographed was never photographed the same way by a retailer, because a studio shot on a white background and a screenshot from a dim living room are two different-looking images of the same coat.

Snagfit works from a written description instead. It reads the garment, writes out what it is, then searches current shopping listings for that description. That handles the lighting problem, because a sentence about a cropped black wool coat with a shawl collar survives being written from a badly lit frame.

It brings its own failure though, and it is the opposite one. A description can match a garment that reads the same in words and looks wrong in the photo. Why Snagfit shows close matches instead of the exact item sets out what each approach can honestly promise.

The sold-out case, where a name is more use than a link

Here is a case that flips the comparison, and it comes up more than you would expect with anything worn by a creator.

The garment is from a collection that sold through eight months ago. No shop has it. A tool built around buy links has nothing useful to hand you, because the honest answer is that there is no link to give.

A tool built around naming still helps. If Lens App tells you the piece is a quilted liner jacket in olive with a corduroy collar, you now have the words to search resale sites, set an alert, or find the season it came from. The name still works after the listing is gone.
